Yamagata Isao was a Japanese actor born in London, England, where his acrobat father toured. He grew up in Ichibei-cho, Azabu-ku, Tokyo. In 1935, he graduated from the Japan Academy of Actors. After completing his military service, he joined the Toho Theater Company in 1936. In 1942, he formed the theater company Bunkaza and remained with the company until 1953. In 1949, he made his first movie appearance. In 1953, he played in the movie "Hell Gate" which won the Grand Prix at the 7th Cannes International Film Festival. In 1988, he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, 4th Class. He died at the age of 80, due to pulmonary tuberculosis, which he had been suffering from since he was young.
