Edward Yang is considered one of the leading filmmakers of Taiwan's New Wave Cinema movement in the 1980s and 1990s. Yang went to university and lived in the United States before deciding to pursue his dream of filmmaking. His big break was in the anthology film, "In Our Time" (1982). Yang's "Taipei Story" (1985) starred his friend and director, Hou Hsiao Hsien, as well as Yang's future wife, Tsai Chin. His epic "A Brighter Summer Day" (1991) was critically acclaimed and is considered a masterpiece by many. He is, perhaps, best known for his final film, "Yi Yi" (2000), for which earned him Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival. On June 29, 2007, Yang died after a seven-year battle with colon cancer. He was survived by his second wife, Kalli Peng, and his son, Sean. (Source: Wikipedia).
